ABOUT THE BOOKSTORE
Some stores sell books. We sell liberation.
Reparations Books & Café is Atlanta's first Black feminist brick-and-mortar bookstore and community gathering space, and it is the physical home of The Griot Collective.
Every book on the shelf was chosen with intention. Every title is an act of resistance. Every author represented here is a testament to the intellectual, creative, and cultural power of Black people, and Black women in particular.
We are not a bookstore that happens to have a café. We are a community institution that happens to sell books and coffee. The difference matters.
Reparations Books & Café was born from a simple but radical belief: that Black feminist thought deserves a physical address. That the scholarship, the storytelling, the theory, and the lived experience that Black women have produced for centuries deserves a home where the community can walk in, sit down, and be transformed.
This is that home.
Our shelves center:
-
Black feminist scholarship and theory
-
Africana Studies and Black intellectual history
-
Hip-hop culture and criticism
-
Political organizing and civic education
-
Black women's memoir, fiction, and poetry
-
Children's books that center Black joy, Black excellence, and Black identity
-
We also carry titles by local Atlanta authors, HBCU scholars, and independent Black publishers because the ecosystem matters as much as the individual book.
OPENING UPDATES & TIMELINE
The doors are coming. And when they open, Atlanta will never be the same.
Reparations Books & Café is currently only online, but our brick-and-mortar location is in development in Atlanta, Georgia. We are actively building out our inventory and establishing the community programming infrastructure that will make this more than a bookstore from day one.
COMMUNITY PROGRAMMING CONNECTION
The bookstore is the classroom. The community is the curriculum.
Reparations Books & Café is not just a retail space. It is the physical programming hub of The Griot Collective Community Foundation, which means every event, every workshop, every author reading, and every community gathering that happens inside these walls is connected to a larger mission of Black feminist education, civic power, and cultural preservation.
Programming that will live inside Reparations Books & Café:
Literary Events Author readings, book launches, and literary discussions centered on Black feminist scholarship, hip-hop culture, and Black intellectual history. We prioritize local Atlanta authors, HBCU scholars, and independent Black publishers.
Community Education Workshops on Black feminist theory, political education, community organizing, grant writing, and civic engagement, bringing the academy into the community and the community into the academy.
The General's Briefing — Live Select podcast tapings of The General's Briefing: A Black Feminist Analysis will be recorded live inside Reparations Books & Café, giving the community a front-row seat to the scholarship in real time.
Civic Engagement Programming Voter registration drives, civic education events, and community forums, because the bookstore is also a polling place for the mind.
Youth Programming Programming for young people centered on Black history, Black feminist thought, literacy, and civic identity, because the next generation of griots is already here.
